Former Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee chief Navjot Singh Sidhu will be released prematurely from the jail soon. The case for the early remittance of his sentence was okayed by the Punjab Council of Ministers along with that of seven other prisoners under the Amrit Mahotsav scheme.

Sources say that though the agenda item for early release of prisoners did not mention the name of anyone, but with the Council of Ministers giving their nod to release of eight prisoners under the Amrit Mahotsav scheme of the Government of India, Sidhu would be one of them.

It is learnt that there were two categories of prisoners whose sentence remission was put up for approval before the Cabinet today. While the government was to discuss release ofseven prisoners who have served their sentence, the other agenda item was regarding the eight other prisoners who qualify under the Amrit Mahotsav scheme. It is learnt that the jail authorities have already given a report citing his good behaviour in prison.

Sidhu was awarded a one year sentence by the Supreme Court in May 2022 in a road rage case dating back to 1988. Subsequently, he had surrendered before the court and since then is lodged in Patiala jail.
